This test is far more accurate & reliable than the "traditional" needle-biopsy, and has NO bleeding, has NO infection-risk, NO pain & NO discomfort. The biopsy, statistically has a 20-35% inherent error rate, ie. IF you came with a negative biopsy result, there's a 20-35% chance that that result is incorrect.
The test sample is an immediate post-DRE urine sample (DRE: digital rectal examination). IF you have any prostate-cancer (or even any pre-cancerous lesions, like PIN or HGPIN), its corresponding genetic cells (mRNAs) WILL show up in your urine sample AFTER the DRE. The Prostate Cancer gene (PCa3
gene) is highky over-expressed in more than 95% of prostate-cancer cells, with an over-expression rate of > 66-fold, compared to adjacent non-cancerous tissues in the prostate.
Historically, world-wide, about 75% of biopsies come back negative; so, as many as 75% of biospies world-wide have been unnecessary. This PCA3 test ensures that IF you don't have prostate cancer or PIN/HGPIN, you DON'T have to go thro' an unnecessary biopsy which is a rather "brutal" procedure (eg. weeks & weeks of bleeding in the urine & sperm & all the other problems described).
Survival from prostate cancer is NO different from any other type of cancer: the KEY is an early but accurate & reliable detection. IF you're starting to have abnormal indications (ie. raised PSA and/or abnormal DRE), then you MUST find out, via the MOST accurate method available, whether you have prostate cancer or not.
